Elgin Parks and Recreation Dance Program

The Parks and Recreation Department is excited to have partnered with Center Stage Dance Academy for our dance programming at the Centre of Elgin.

Dance the Night Away Recital

Join us for a night of dance! The talented dancers of Elgin Parks and Recreation & Center Stage Dance Academy showcase their talents in “Dance the Night Away!” for their 2024 Recital.

Reserved Seating Tickets are $20 in advance, and $24 day of. If you want to sit together, purchase all tickets in one transaction. If you have questions, or need assistance with handicap seating please call The Hemmens Box Office directly at 847-931-5900 to purchase your tickets.

2024 Summer Classes and Camps

Register online or in-person at the Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way, Elgin, IL, Monday-Thursday 9-6pm, Friday 9-1 and Saturday 9am-Noon.

General Class Description

All classes meet at the Centre of Elgin. We have 3 studios available for classes. Class fees must be paid prior to attending the first class.

Kinder Prep – Ages 4-6 – This is a continuation of tap, ballet and creative movement through fun activities, basic technique, and dance routines. Ballet and Tap shoes required.

Preschool – Ages 3-5: This is an introduction to tap, ballet and creative movement through fun activities, basic technique, and dance routines. Ballet and Tap shoes required.

 JTB Combo – Ages 5-7 – This fun and energetic class will teach basic technique in jazz, tap, and ballet using current dance trends, across the floor and center floor combinations. Ballet and Tap shoes required.

Ballet I & II – Ages 8+ : Ballet I will teach the basic ballet vocabulary and fine tune in detail body placement, posture, hand placement, barre technique, center floor, across the floor, etc. Ballet II components will expand on ballet technique, core strengthening, and flexibility.

Ballet III/IV – Ages 11+ : Must have passed Ballet II or must have teacher approval or evaluation. Continued advanced ballet technique and vocabulary, barre, center floor, variations, petite allegro, grande allegro, advanced choreography. *Dancers may be evaluated for pre-pointe and pointe when in this class.

 Pre-Point/Point – Ages 12+ : Must be in Ballet III or higher and teacher recommended.

Lyrical I – Ages 8+: Introduction to Lyrical – Ballet based class combines ballet, modern and some jazz technique in fluid movement that tells the story of the music. Ballet I & II is highly recommended as lyrical is a ballet-based class.

 Mini Poppers – Ages 5-7: The perfect class for your little hip hop want-to-be! Beginner hip hop movement to teach body control, timing and rhythm.

Hip Hop I – Ages 7+: Beginner Hip Hop – Fun & Energetic Class derived from street dance includes choreography, breaking, popping, locking & b-boy moves personalized with the choreographer’s style and vision.

 Hip Hop II – Ages 10+Must have passed Hip Hop I or teacher approval or evaluation. Expand upon Hip Hop skills and more advanced choreography.

Hip Hop III/IV – Ages 13+ Must have passed Hip Hop II or teacher approval or evaluation. Expand upon Hip Hop skills and more advanced choreography

Tech I/II – Ages 8+ : This class begins with a cardio warm up, then moves to a thorough full body standing then floor stretch, center floor conditioning and core strengthening. Across the floor progressions. Center floor combinations alternating genres throughout the session. Improv weekly. Dancers start bare foot but should bring socks, a thera-band and a water bottle. We use yoga blocks during this class as well. Dancers need jazz and lyrical shoes for this class.

Tech III/IV – Ages 11+ : Advanced class – must have passed Tech I/II or have teacher approval or evaluation. More advanced and longer cardio warm up. More advanced stretch routine working over splits. More advanced technical warm up exercises and core strengthening. More advanced across the floor progressions and center floor choreography alternating genres. Improv weekly. Dancers start bare foot but should bring socks, a thera band and a water bottle. We use yoga blocks during this class as well. Dancers need jazz and lyrical shoes for this class. Older dancers should have heels in their bags as well.

Jazz I – Ages 8+ : Ballet based upbeat form of dance combines isolations, specific lines, turns, jumps & leaps in across the floor and center combinations.

Jazz III/IV – Ages 11+ : Must have passed level I/II or teacher approval or evaluation. Expand upon your jazz skills at a more advanced level, move at a quicker pace and more advanced choreography.

Contemporary I – Ages 8+ : Expressive form combining modern, lyrical and ballet connecting the mind & body through abstract and fluid movement quality. Introduction to improvisation is also included.

Contemporary III/IV – Advanced Level Class – Teacher Approval Required – (must have passed Contemporary I/II or had teacher evaluation). Expanding upon contemporary technique, movement quality and improvisational skills.

Tap I – Ages 8 +: Introduction to tap – basic tap vocabulary and choreography. No experience necessary. Tap shoes required.

Turns, Jumps, Leaps I – Ages 8+ : Build your skills in various types of turns, jumps and leaps. We begin with a cardio warm up, full stretch, jumping drill then alternate between a variation of turns, jumps and leaps.

Turns, Jumps, Leaps Intermediate/Advanced – Ages 11+  : Expand upon your skills at a more advanced level –  turns in second, switch leaps, etc.
